Celtics vs. Isaiah Thomas
August 28th, 2017

If you have not heard by now, the Celtics and Cavs trade involving I.T. and Kyrie Irving is now at a stalemate. Evidently, Thomas' physical did not go well and raised concerns to Cleveland's front office. Now I'm sure the Cavs saw Thomas grimacing and missing games in last year's playoff series AGAINST THEM so I'm confused as to why they are surprised (but that is none of my business.) Also, the Cavs got the most bang for their buck given that Kyrie wanted out anyway and still acquired a pretty even trade. Due to the fact that the Cavs are asking for even more for the deal, affirms the general public doubt that the trade will be completed.

Additionally, this poses the question...What the hell happens to I.T.? As the Celtics, do you still try to deal him? As Thomas, do you even want to put that Boston uniform back on after the attempted trade? Given, Isaiah's personality and demeanor I would guess not. Thomas plays with a chip on his shoulder and this will most likely add fuel to the fire. If I were Thomas I would pose an ultimatum by either demanding an extension or demanding a trade. Everytime we see deals like this it reassures that pro sports are ultimately a business. Even after pouring out his heart and playing a few days after his sister's tragic death, the Celtics decided to deal him. It's funny how us as consumers of the product require players to give everything they have to an organization (including loyalty) and they can be cut or traded at any time. Nevertheless, I would completely support any anguish or distaste for Danny Ainge on I.T.'s part.

Shifting gears to Ainge's point of view, dealing I.T. still makes sense. I have preached on dealing I.T. for awhile (I know it is very unfortunate and I just gave reasons why they should show their loyalty to the 29 PPG guard but trading him looks to be the best option) and they almost completed that task. Moving forward I think starting off the 2018 season with Thomas would be toxic to the front office and to the locker room. Therefore, I would look into dealing him to a new team. This poses a huge hurdle because the entire league just saw the Kyrie deal blow up in their faces so it will diminish Thomas' trade value. If I were Ainge you have to make another big decision: either keep Thomas and deal with the headache that he will most likely bring or trade him for 20 cents on the dollar for his worth. Again, Ainge is back on the clock. If I were in his shoes I would look into dealing him to another team or see if he is willing to work out a short term deal moving forward. Of course, Boston should be a little relieved that they get to start over and get their pick back (given that the trade officially gets voided.)  Look out for Boston trade rumors to swirl in the media and I fully expect them to reach out for names like Demarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, Kemba Walker or Kevin Love.
